Rohit Sharma will captain India in the T20 World Cup 2024, Jay Shah clears all speculations

BCCI secretary Jay Shah ended the speculations about India's captaincy conundrum for the T20 World Cup on Wednesday by announcing that Rohit Sharma, not Hardik Pandya, will lead the team into the competition in the West Indies.

Jay Shah on Rohit Sharma

"In 2023 (final) at Ahmedabad, even though we did not win the World Cup after 10 straight wins, we won hearts, I want to promise you that in 2024 (T20 World Cup) in Barbados (venue for the final), under Rohit Sharma's captaincy, ham Bharat ka jhanda gaadenge (we will hoist the Indian flag)," Shah said at the event held at Niranjan Shah Stadium in the Indian city of Rajkot.

"We were going to let Rohit continue leading; he has the ability; as I mentioned, we won ten games in the ODI World Cup. We didn't win the final, but that's just part of the game; whoever plays better wins," said Rohit, who had previously captained the team in other formats. - Shah said

Hardik could be the alternate captain

With Rohit returning to the T20I fold following the 2022 T20 World Cup catastrophe in the recent series against Afghanistan, Shah's statements almost suggest that he will be the team's captain. In Rohit's absence, Pandya had been captaining India in the shortest format and had captained the team in most of the T20I series following the 2022 World Cup.

Pandya is currently recovering from an ankle injury he sustained against Bangladesh at the ODI World Cup last year. He hopes to be fully recovered in time for the newest Indian Premier League season, in which he will be skipper for the Mumbai Indians instead of Rohit.

India will face Pakistan, Ireland, and Canada, and co-hosts the United States in the 2024 T20 World Cup group stages.
